Well, It's Only a Mountain, It's Only A Mountain

Oh Hi!~ I’m still around. I decided to take a page out of Kasmira’s book and not tell you I would be gone for safety reasons. And as long as I’m being honest…my husband went out of town, not me. I still got dressed and went to work everyday. But I haven’t exactly learned to use the new camera yet. So I didn’t take pictures. Lesson learned, I need to learn to use the camera.

And staying honest…

March 22

Meh. I’m not super impressed with this. It was thrown together last minute. I literally slept in those leggings and then dressed around them. I had a really hard time waking up today, and I think it shows. I am also really having trouble dressing for the weather lately. My mind has moved on to Spring ensembles, but the weather has refused to cooperate. It snowed all day Saturday. And it was 37 degrees (F) when I woke up today.

March 22

It’s not terrible. It doesn’t make me feel fat, and that's a pretty big feat these days, to be honest. It’s comfortable, and it covers everything that needs covering. I just don’t love it.

March 22

I’ve been doing some deep thinking about the blog lately. (Don’t you just hate when that happens?) My blog is designed to feature low budget fashion. And it does. But I am at a point now where I don’t even have a low budget for fashion. I have no budget for fashion. I don’t mention it much on here, but my husband was laid off in December of 2008. He has had some freelance here and there, but he has not found steady work. We have done a really good job of staying afloat so far, but I have also had a really hard time facing up to reality. Nathan has been more than patient and more than understanding about it. We are at the place where money? It’s really tight. And for me, not buying clothes is a challenge no matter what, but I feel added pressure to buy new things to keep the blog fresh, to remain interesting. Not pressure for you, pressure from me. And I have to really face up to that right now and see if I can continue to present a relevant, interesting blog without purchasing new things. I know others before me have done just that, but I feel like I’m working from a much smaller wardrobe than those people. Maybe I’m not, but I feel like I am. So that’s where I am at. Thanks for reading, and I hope you’ll stick around.

Bruises Bigger Than Dinner Plates

I am not a huge fan of St Patrick’s Day. I’m not a big drinker, and contrary to what my name might lead you to believe, I am not Irish. I don’t like green, and I resent being told what to wear.

March 17

I wear a bit of green anyway, because you never know what kind of zealous nutcase you might run into, running around the office or wherever, gleefully pinching everyone not wearing green. (I cannot believe this is an acceptable practice, buy the way. I mean, what if I took to slapping everyone who was dressed sloppy on the last Friday in March every year, and called it “Stay Fabulous or Get Slapped Friday”? I feel like they deserve it, I shouldn’t have to look at that, and it seems like a more valid thing to physically assault someone over than a lack of green.*)

March 17

I feel like this dress has a lot of re-mix potential. I have several different pairs of shoes and sandals I think will be fun with it, but this particular ensemble (minus the necklaces, but I’ll discuss that later) seemed like the most obvious to me, and I wanted to start with the obvious and move forward. The cowboy boots and chambray run the risk of being to country, but not if you add the studded belt and biker jacket.

March 17

It wrinkles like crazy in the back, which is it’s only real fault, and I will have to iron it pretty much every time I wear it, and we all know how I feel about that. I am hoping that the sitting wrinkles are something Downy Wrinkle Releaser can take care of for me, but it’s looking doubtful. It’s cotton, but it thinks it’s linen.

March 17

These are both really nice necklaces, but not what I really wanted to wear. I wanted to wear my Isabella Wolf Fang Necklace and my Dharma Wheel. But I also don’t want to be pinched by aforementioned zealots.

*OK, maybe it's not fair to assault people for that either. But being told what to wear makes me super cranky. And I think “Stay Fabulous or Get Slapped Friday” might be a holiday we should seriously consider. We can keep the slapping light.

Take Your Body to the Floor, Your Disco Needs You

So this morning as I was walking up the stairs to the office I was thinking about how I basically wore these pants yesterday. I have two pair, so I didn’t literally wear the same pants*, but as far as everyone else is concerned, I might as well be. And then I started thinking about my collection of denim leggings. I have 2 of every kind I own with the exception of a blue pair I got a long time ago at Target. The only reason I have only one pair of those and not two is that they only had 1 pair left, and they never restocked.

March 16

That got me started thinking about multiples, because I also have this top in reds and pinks. And I have dresses I have in twos. And shoes. And two black leather biker jackets with spikes. And so I thought maybe I would talk about multiples today on the blog. And then I got online and you know what? Sal and Winona already covered it. Today. How strange is that? Talk about multiples!

March 16

What are your feelings on multiples? Do you buy things in multiple colors? Or multiples of the very same thing? Clearly my outfit today proves I believe in both!~

March 16

*I don’t wash my pants every time I wear them, heck I don’t wash them every 3 times. I wash them when they need it. But I still wear a different pair of the "same" pants if I am going to wear the “same” pants two days in a row. I’m not sure why other than to have something to counter with when a co-worker accuses me of wearing the same pants two days in a row. Not that that has ever happened, it is apparently just a fear of mine.

All The Lights Came On At Sunset

I had a pretty good weekend, I did not do any of the things I should have. I did one load of laundry. And I did not clean the house. I did not buy groceries. Instead, I went to a dinner party, laid in bed, went to dinner and watched several bad movies on the TV. I’m not sorry, to be honest.

March 15

It is possible I am addicted to adding hardware to this jacket. This weekend I added those chains to the side, and Nathan has me almost convinced it needs studs in the little panels where the zippers open on the sleeves (I never zip those shut; it would totally cut off my circulation!).

March 15

But look how fun the chains are! And it was so easy. I connected the chain to a large jump ring in three places to get the lengths I wanted and then used a safety pin to attach the chains to the underside of the epaulet (I hope that is how you spell that, I know how to say it, but never dreamed of a need to write it.) It took less than 10 minutes.

March 15

I’m not sure I’ll be able to wear this jacket much longer this year. As of right now, it’s chilly enough to wear it in the mornings and evenings, but way too hot to put it on mid-afternoon. I’ll miss it. It is one of my favorite things to wear. It’s so perfect for me. Normally I would get bored with something after as long as I’ve had this (a couple years, lots of wear) but I don’t think I will ever get bored with this jacket.

March 15

How was your weekend? Did you do anything fun? I skipped the St Patrick’s Day Parades, I am not sure I’ve ever been to one. I’ve been out to celebrate at night, or afternoon, but never in the AM. I’m not sure I could handle drunk people so early. Did you brave one?

To Cast Divine Arrows Into Her Soul

Nathan and I have been living in a very small space for a lot longer than we intended to for various (and largely irritating) reasons. But we make due. Honestly, I’m pretty proud of how much personality we fit into such a small space. I’m a bit of a homebody. I’d rather you come spend Friday night round at mine, eating take away, watching DVDs or listening to records than almost anything else, to be honest. And I’m very particular about the living room.

Until now, I have forbidden exercise equipment from this space. But last weekend, I admitted defeat. I have found one exercise, ever, that I don’t hate, and that’s my Tony Little Gazelle. Yes. It is. And last weekend I shuffled things around an already tight space to make room for mine in the living room. I’m not happy about the look of it. But I am past caring. I know if it’s in there I can make myself do it while catching up on Life Unexpected or the ridiculousness that is “The Secret Life of the American Teenager*. So my battle into taking better care of myself has begun. Portion control has been enacted, and the Gazelle is being used. I’m feeling good about it.

March 2

We went to two different Targets this weekend, armed with my birthday gift cards. As soon as we passed this display of tie dyed v-neck tees, I knew $10 would be going to one of those. In fact, I might go back for a back-up. I am a sucker for anything black and white and anything tie dyed, so this tee is just perfect for me. And you can’t beat $10.

March 2

I’m giving Douglas Coupland one more try. Everyone seems to just love him. I’ve tried two of his books** before and not finished either, so I am not sure WHY I am trying him again other than I got it at Half Price Books and it was cheap. I’ll let you know. It’s off to an OK start, but the Goodreads reviews indicate it might be all downhill from here.

March 2

I also picked up a plaid shirt and a great basic black skirt that is neither too long (and has to be hiked up to my boobs) or too short (and can only be worn with leggings). I was really excited by that find! And two tie dyed crew neck tees from the men’s department, which had much better color options than the ladies’.

March 2

The shopping ban is over, BTW. I cheated twice, right at the very end. Once on a pair of shoes last Friday, I saw them a week ago that day when I was spending birthday money and could not stop thinking about them. So I bought them and justified it as a birthday gift to myself. And a second time on Saturday when I was feeling sorry for myself (hey, it happens!) and bought a $5 Maybelline lipgloss at the CVS. It was worth every penny and it is the best lipgloss I have had in ages. I will probably go right back on a ban very soon, out of necessity and also just because it felt good to challenge myself. But I’m going to take a breather just for a minute. I feel pretty good about how I did.

(I've noticed a lot of comments about going out to look for things, and to help you know when you might be able to do that, I'm going to start noting recent purchases in the outfit details at the bottom. If I got something within the past couple of months, I'll note it as recent.)

*simultaneously one of the best and worst shows on TV. No one can act, not even Molly Ringwald seems to remember how, but the dramatic plots twists are delicious in their levels of ridiculousness, and we just can’t seem to stop watching.
**”Girlfriend In A Coma” and “Microserfs” I can’t even remember what I didn’t like about them.

He Made Me A Tape of Bootlegs and B-Sides

So it turns out there is a reason you guys don’t take pics in snow storms other than discomfort. I know, it seems so obvious now, the snow ruins the picture, but I swear I just didn’t think about it! I’m not going to bother with putting these on Weardrobe or Wardrobe Remix, but I feel like we are friends, and this blog is about more than showing off my outfits, so even though you can’t make out a lot of details, I’m going to post them anyway. If for no other reason than to keep up with my all black week and to say hi. Hi!

Feb 11

I’ve had a few questions about those socks. They do stay up all by themselves, I do not do a lot of adjusting during the day, but that may just be because I always wear them over leggings or tights and they have something to grip. As far as size, well, I don’t know any other way to let you know about the sizing than to just lay it all out there for you, so I will. My leg, right there where they are sitting, is 16 inches around and I feel like they have a good 2 or 3 inches of stretch left in them. They are tight enough to stay up, but not at all uncomfortable. And very warm.

Feb 11

It’s still coming down pretty hard. We are supposed to get about 4 inches or so over the course of the day. Which is nothing I know, but 4 inches more than normal. It’s really very pretty right now, and not all that bad on the roads*.

Stay safe and warm!

*OMG, you guys, people from Texas CANNOT drive in ice and snow. We don’t have the proper tires or skills. No one slows down and everyone is an idiot. Except all the people I know, and we are just better than everyone else is all.

And This is Where I Realize, My Trouble Comes With Bluest Eyes

My Edit wrote an amazing and honest post about the end of her first year as a fashion blogger. Highly recommended reading.

So I had an awesome dream last night. All of my awesome dreams are either sci-fi or have vampires or zombies in them. This one had both vampires and zombies. We (Nathan and I) were staying at a rural hotel (I know, that would never happen, but dreams are weird like that). The hotel was attacked one night by vampires. Oddly enough this attack was brief and the hotel staff and guests pretty much killed them all right quick. Then zombies attacked. We set fire to the zombies that had gotten in by dousing them with stuff from the bar and throwing matches at them. In my dreams, this is an acceptable way to kill zombies. Of course setting fire to zombies inside will lead to the building burning down, but lucky for us it was a multi building complex. We moved next door, took all the doorknobs off the doors so that the building was only accessible via deadbolt. Then we tore down the stairs and boarded up all the first floor windows. At some point some dude’s mom pretended she was going to kill herself, and instead she shot the dude standing next to her so I put a bullet between her eyes. The dude said it was cool though, because she was a jerk. In my dreams, apparently I am a cold blooded killer of both zombies and other people’s mom’s. Is it just me or is that a bit disturbing?

In I Got Dressed News, I woke up feeling uninspired due to both the shopping ban and the cold, so I decided to declare this a theme week. I don’t think I have ever done a theme week, but this is all black week. So there!~

February 10

I keep thinking I want to have this dress made into a skirt. What are your thoughts on that? It’s lined, so it would be a bit more expensive. But I think it might be nicer than always having to hide the top of the dress (which is too costume-y)

February 10

It’s 32 degrees so I’ve got on 2 pair of leggings. I have seen footage from some of the areas that are snowed in, and I have to be honest I don’t’ even really have the experience to draw from to have ANY idea what that must be like. At all. I hope you are warm and I hope you have plenty of food and water and books. And blankets!

February 10

I managed to get my hands on a couple of bottles of Mad As A Hatter from the OPI Alice in Wonderland tie in collection and…SWOON. The picture does it no justice. It is to die for. Glitter glitter glitter. I takes 2-3 coats to get this look and it tends to just peel off in sheets so removal is a snap!

Mad as a Hatter by OPI

Nathan took this random picture today as I was getting ready to get in the car and it’s just my lunch bag (I normally use a reusable one, but I left it at work) but I really liked it.

And today is the third day of Valentines. I got this ADORABLE ceramic cupcake jar from Target. I LOVE it.

You'll Never Gain Weight From A Donut Hole

Hey you know what? It’s the second day of Valentines! Yesterday was the first. The Seven Days of Valentines* is my favorite holiday. Its seven days of gifts and seven days of poems written about those gifts. The poems are basically hints as to what the gift is, and I get them first, and then the gift. Basically its a week long celebration of me. Or rather, Nathan’s love for me. I believe it is in it’s *ponders, does maths* 14th year? Possibly 13th. I can’t be sure really, I’m no good at maths. The Seven Days of Valentines puts me in a good mood. Yesterday I got a candle and today I got a paperback copy of “Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs” .

In other news…I wore all black yesterday and am wearing it today as well. (I overslept by almost an HOUR yesterday). I am kind of a fan of all black, to be honest. I enjoy a splash of color as much as the next girl, but there is something to be said for the simplicity and sophistication of all black as long as it’s not the ONLY thing you ever wear (and even then, if that’s your thing and you keep it interesting, go you).

February 9

You know, those gloves are sure handy. I got them because this Bona Drag jacket is pretty much not an option during the winter without them, since the crop sleeves mean I’d get frostbite on my arms on days like today. I really prefer to wear this jacket instead of the other one when I’m going for a more “dressy” look, since it’s fitted and fit can be everything in a garment. (I totally understand one might find the concept of a “dress” biker jacket and a “casual” biker jacket amusing, I mean, I kind of find it amusing myself.)

February 9

Look. A trouser fit pant. It’s like an endangered species in my wardrobe. I have, well, just these basically. I do like the fit on these and they are comfortable. I'm just not a trouser fit girl at heart.

February 9

That bag is one of the last leather bags I ever saw at Express. It was a gift with purchase, or maybe a purchase with purchase? I think you had to spend $50 and then it was $25? I don’t remember, it was a long time ago, but I do remember that my boss at the time and I went down to the mall to get it ASAP when we heard about it!

Old Lady Rant You Have Heard From Me Before: I miss leather bags at affordable rates in normal shops!. I remember not 10 years ago you could get a leather bag at Target for crying out loud, or Express or Rampage. And now everything is pleather. Or “vegan leather”. OK, here’s the thing, kids. There is no such thing as “vegan leather". It’s either leather or it’s vegan. Ok?

February 9

I got those feathers from the final sale section of the website when I bought them and I think I bought every last one they had. I wish there had been more. I think I managed to make one pair to sell? And I had a couple of the amber and ivory colored ones too. They were really nice and I am forever on the prowl for a similar and similarly priced component.

*We know they did something similar on the Simpsons one year, but we looked at the date at the end of the episode and it’s from a couple years AFTER Nathan started it, so THERE.

With My Big Black Boots and an Old Suitcase

So I think the bag is darkening. I do. And it only needed 2 leather wipes last night as opposed to 6 the day before. I’m going to stop oiling the inside of the flap so I can watch my progress. But I will basically be spending the day today holding it away from my jeans. I am SUCH a goober. Last week, I noticed a dark spot across the bottom back edge of the bag and I cleaned it off for the most part, but you know what did it? THESE JEGGINGS*. I just didn’t think about it. I’m normally very smart about things like that, but I spaced. And then I did it again today. Oy.

January 19

We got to wear jeans today! Yay!~ Because we have to move a bunch of boxes out of a conference room this afternoon. Boo.

January 19

I always think “I can’t wear red lips”, but I’m wearing it today and looking at the pics I so can. It just has to be a good skin week, ha!~ I’ve got on Cover Girls Outlast Lipstain (you know I love them!) in #440 and I’ve topped it with the sheer pineapple juice gloss from Bath and Body Works (which is just gold shimmer, no color, and I love it, and I think they discontinued it.)

January 19

*They are dark wash and I’ve never washed them. I wash jeans when they can walk themselves to the washer and not before. Part of that is because I am lazy, and part of that is because it makes your clothes last longer to wash them only when they really need it. Underpants and are excluded from this theory.

I Know It’s Hard to Achieve, But Can’t a Girl Believe?

My pictures today make me look like I’ve been living hard, but really I’m just not sleeping well. It’s true what they say, you look better when you are well rested. I’ve had trouble sleeping for years now. I am one of those restless sleepers who wake up several times a night. To go to the bathroom, to worry, to think. I am not sure why. I’ve tried over the counter pills but so far it has never gotten bad enough to move to prescription pills. I have to be honest, those scare me!

December 1

We are supposed to get our first freeze tonight, so I broke out the over the knee socks. I actually tried wearing them with some chunky leather platform sandals, but just was not feeling it. I still really want to try that look, I just think I missed the mark this AM.

December 1

That’s a scarf made to look like a vintage fox stole. I have always loved the look of vintage fox stoles, but they are…well…creepy. I am not a huge fur person. I had a mink once that I got for $20.00 at a thrift store, and it was really nice, but kind of gross. I know that makes no sense at all because I love any and all leather goods. But fur just gives me the willies.

December 1

When I saw this on the front page of Etsy I just could not resist, even though it cleaned my paypal account right out. I’m hoping to open Love Erin Designs up again soon, but I just have not had the time yet.

December 1

It has a little clip under its head, and you can clip it to its own tail, vintage style, but I clipped it to the jacket collar for today. I just thought it super cute and kind of funny to wear it on the jacket.

A reader recently asked if there was a trick to layering necklaces, and I personally have a couple. One is that all the chains need to be different. Two necklaces made of the same chain tend to tangle really badly for me. Another is that the pendants need to fall at different lengths, even if just slightly, like with my diamond and talon necklaces, so that you can see each one. What are your tricks or tips for layering necklaces?

Back in Black (and White)

And so it begins. I have had super short weeks at work the past couple of weeks and it all ends here! Back to 5 days in a row, all week, every week. It’s OK though. I feel rested, I saw my best friend and my house is clean. I ended the weekend yesterday by having Bill come over and watch my most alarming anime (Please Twins!) with me.

November 30

This dress is another mark item. I tend to give mark things mixed reviews, but I guess I have better luck with them than a lot of people. They tend to be a good fit on me. And I love black and white. I am a huge fan of that tie dyed scarf as well, and look forward to pairing it with many more things over the Fall and Winter.

November 30

My hair. It’s getting pretty long, I know. I think I probably need to go in and have the ends trimmed, but I have to admit, I love when it gets this long. So far this seems to be as long as I can manage to get it without breakage. Any tips to get it longer? Am I crazy for wanting it longer? I wash twice a week, use sulfate free shampoo, condition and rinse with cool water. I use a cream for protection from heat styling, and since I only wash twice a week, I only blow dry and straighten that often. I dye it maybe once every 4 months, to cover the tons of grey.

November 30

November 30

I love these earrings! Alannah got them in Chicago at H&M and they are so long they go past my shoulders. I love the way they get tossed along with my hair when I flip it back. They are a bit overpowering though, and they have to be worn alone, without necklaces. Even the tiny diamond choker I have looked silly with them! They mean business.

Walk, Walk, Fashion Baby

Hello!~ I missed you! I will check and repond to my comments later today.

I had a great loooooooooong weekend with Alannah. We watched more Girls Aloud than you think possible We watched “The Passions of Girls Aloud” (Nicola, Cheryl and Kimberly, and to be honest, Cheryl’s episode was by far my favorite, Push 10 baby, Push 10), The Tangled Up Tour, The Out of Control Tour, The entire “Off The Record” series and some of the What Would The Neighbors Say Tour.

We were mostly casual. Way casual. But we are still adorable.

(We don't match on purpose, we are just both super cool and wear moto jackets all the time.)
Alannah and I

We also went thrifting and had dinner with friends and such. When we went thrifting I wore this:

November 20

Which is a great out fit to thrift in. I have on a black tank under the tunic which means I have on leggings and a tank and can try on just about anything anywhere sans dressing room. The boots slip off easily to try on shoes, and I have on socks. I am also wearing minimal jewelry so that things are easily off and on without lots of snags.

November 20

To be honest it was TOTALLY wasted this particular trip as I found NOTHING to try on. I found nothing in general. I was actually super disappointed at the Goodwill because they tend to get Fossil bags from somewhere and they had two of the styles I had been most interested in finding there….but someone had taken the straps to both of them!~ It was so disappointing, I know I could have straps made, but it would cost so much that I couldn’t afford to. Oh well!

November 20

Better luck next time I suppose. At least we got out of the house. Ha!~ We needed a bit of time away from the TV, I suppose.

You Gotta Get With My Friends

(Yesterday I recorded the MTV morning show “AMTV” in hopes that I would catch the crazy new Lady Gaga video to show Nathan, and you know what they played? They played Wannabe, by The Spice Girls. I am now recording that show on a daily basis in hopes of more such anomalies.)

So here is the deal with this outfit. I know it hides my figure. I’m aware. I just don’t care. All of the color and pattern makes me feel happy and light.

November 18

The insurance guy called yesterday to tell me they are totaling the car. It’s disappointing and it’s defeating, and I am not really going to deal with it right now. I know I will have to at some point, but for now, I choose to forget about it.

November 18

Life has been hard this year, I won’t lie. But I have my health. I have a good job, and I have a wonderful husband. So I’m going to focus on that. PLUS my Alannah girl is coming TOMORROW to visit and we are going to sit on the couch and watch Girls Aloud DVDs and eat cake balls and talk and it will be awesome.

November 18

I have 3 days of vacation and I am looking forward to every minute. I am going to spend the rest of the week and weekend with Alannah and then Monday I am going to go in the middle of the day, alone, to see New Moon.

November 18

I’m still wearing these. I hope you like them or else this might get really boring for you for a bit, you know how I tend to fixate on pieces and wear them over and over!
