Too Much Candy Gonna Rot Your Soul

When the Zac Posen collection for Target was first announced, there was a gorgeous pink dress, and all the magazines featured it. It was perfect. Floaty and flattering and just a bit edgy. I wanted that dress. I ripped the picture out and kept it in my wallet. I would lie in bed and think about that dress. And as luck would have it, I got that dress.

June 15

We happened to be visiting friends in Austen the day the collection debuted, and I asked if anyone minded stopping in the Target on the way home from brunch. When we got there, not only did they have most of the collection, already on display and ready for sale, but NO ONE was shopping it! In Dallas, I often have to go to multiple Targets to get a dress the day a designer collection debuts, and due to their popularity, even if I get there right when the store opens, it’s not a sure thing, so having the entire collection to quietly shop at my own pace was just magical.

June 15

I tried on several things. There was a navy blue dress with snaps that made my boobs look like works of art, honest. It was amazing. But not very practical. Mr. Posen really knows how to make a girl look great. But money is tight, and I can’t afford to get everything I want. Oh, cruel life!

June 15

But not really. Because I did get that gorgeous pink dress. I’m not sure why it took me so long to wear it. I took it off the rack and admired it often. But I never wore it. I think it might be a case of loving it too much. I was almost nervous to wear it, worried I might get something on it, or snag the skirt. But I didn’t. And I felt SO PRETTY. (Even though not a single person at the office commented on the fact that I was wearing the prettiest day dress ever made. The nerve! It’s OK, I totally called them out on it.

P.S. The day I wore the dress? The kids on MTVs “The City” went to the Zac Posen for Target launch party on the show!

A Million Ancient Bees Began To Sting Our Knees

I don’t know why I feel the need to mention it every time, but I do! This is my Blogs First Dress. I remember buying this at Urban Outfitters YEARS ago. It was on sale, it had originally been like 60 bucks, you know how they do over there, and it was reduced to like 30 bucks. That was still a lot for a dress, but I bought it. And I have never regretted it. At this point it is full of picks and runs, but the pattern of the fabric makes them pretty much unnoticeable. I can’t believe how well it is holding up to be honest!

April 28

Every time I wear it, I try on several different jackets and cardigans, and I almost always end up with this one. The floaty-ness of the cardigan and the floaty-ness of the dress just go really well together.

April 28

I am in love with those clogs. I admit, it is possible I have made a bit of a fashion misstep with them. Sometimes I look at them and think they are the height of style and so cute and sometimes I think they are just this side of the geriatric wing of the hospital. But the truth is, either way, I love them.

April 28

They are much more comfortable than I could have hoped for and if I could afford to I would turn around and order the tan color right now. I actually had a hard time deciding between the two in the beginning and went back and forth over which pair would go with more things, but in the end I felt it was six of one, half a dozen of another and ordered the black.

April 28

What do you think? Are you on board with the return of clogs? Are you only on board with some styles (like the gorgeous Jeffery Campbell Charli-C high heeled ones), or all of them? Did you wear them in the past? (When was the last time they were popular, the nineties?) I know I have had some before, and I know that a lot of people will say that if you wore it the first time around then you are too old for it the second time around and to those people I say “Please go see Ms Wendy B, so she can set you straight.”

Melt Me Slowly Down

I almost appear to be glowing in these pictures, but I promise I’m not.

April 19

I woke up a 4:30 AM this morning. No reason. Just happens sometimes. I tried to get back to sleep but didn’t manage until sometime between 7:40 and 7:50. I know this because I looked at the clock at 7:40, but was awakened by the alarm at 7:50. It was a brutal.

April 19

We are in such a weird place right now. It’s normally much warmer by now in Dallas, at least I think it is. And I feel like it’s too late in the year to be wearing leggings, and too cold to go bare legged. I lucked out with this maxi dress today as a happy medium. I have one pair of pants that are comfortable and I can’t really afford more. It’s getting tough to figure out what to wear, and it doesn’t look to be warming up this week. I am going to hit up the Wal-Mart, I think, and see if I can’t find a pair of cheap pants to make it through until I lose a bit of this weight. What I DON’T want to do is crash diet or try and lose it quickly. That doesn’t work for me.

April 19

Did you have a good weekend? I spent Friday night at home, we had pizza and watched Mad Men. Saturday we went to Good Records for Record Store Day and then my friend Kelly took me on a date for the best hibachi I’ve had in a while. Yesterday was a quiet day at home with more Mad Men and several hours of cleaning. I hate cleaning, but I love a clean house!~

Let The Sun Shine Down From Above

If I look sleepy and kind of bored, it’s because I’m sleepy…and kind of bored. I got a lot of stuff done last night. I updated my Blackberry, which, no kidding all told took about 3 hours. It had stopped receiving e-mails and texts, but updating it seems to have fixed the problem, for now. I did two loads of laundry, changed the sheets on the bed, and did my belly Pilates. Showered, blow dried my hair and read. But I didn’t plan an outfit. And then I overslept.

April 13

I could have done worse! I could have done better, too, but everything was still wet. I half planned three different outfits this morning only to be thwarted by wet clothes. I didn’t take into account that it is Spring now, and the heater was not on all night helping them dry.

April 13

I forgot to put on earrings, and I have a big zit right on the front of my face. Some days just don’t go your way. But I had a Weight Watchers breakfast quesadilla and I’ve got free passes to a movie tomorrow night, so things are looking up already.

I can’t wait to show you guys the pictures from this weekend. Colleen got some great shots, and so did Nathan. Nathan actually got some really good shots of Colleen getting good shots.

It's Time To Step It Up A Notch

I have a lot to talk about today, so if you are just here for the pics…skip to the end.

I want to start by mentioning a great project by some of the ladies in our community.

Basse Mode is a project to create a magazine focusing on what the creators are calling “low fashion”. I’m very excited about the concept. I cannot tell you how many times I have asked Nathan why there are no magazines that focuses on shopping and fashion for the middle class. I can’t afford 99% of the things in fashion magazines. Lucky, when they started, used to be much better about incorporating some affordable fashion, but I actually opted not to renew my subscription this year as more and more it was only focusing on high end pieces. Look, high end pieces are great. And they have their place. I enjoy reading about them and I aspire to be able to own some one day. But that’s not the reality for me now. Nor is it the reality for most of you. Here is a snippet from Basse Mode’s site:

“Basse Mode is a magazine built for normal everyday women. We know that the feeling of flicking through a glossy magazine can’t be beaten. However, all the magazines feature the same thing – unwearable looks, unaffordable clothes, and an emphasis on being and looking the same as one another. We want to condense all the brilliance that the fashion blogging world has to offer into something that we can put on the coffee table. That we can show off on the coffee table. A beautiful documentation of what real women wear, what real people think, and things that actually affect our lives. Nothing like this has ever been done before, but we think it could be brilliant.”

Pop over and take a look. Seriously consider signing up to contribute. I already have. I’ve got a link over in the side bar below my followers, and you can get that badge over at Basse Mode. If you believe in the project, I encourage you to get involved, and post the badge on your site.

I also want to talk a little bit about “Stay Fabulous or Get Slapped Friday”. There are not a lot of rules, OK? But there are a couple.

1. No slapping someone who has made an effort. Not everyone can be as naturally stylish as you.

2. I’m going to go ahead and state that slapping people at work or school is probably a bad idea. If you get into trouble, do not blame me.

3. Remember that the whole thing is just for fun. No hurting people. Faces or feelings. (Unless they have those sweatpants on that have something written across the bum, and then look, I totally understand. You can’t be expected not to over react to something like that. Especially if they are also wearing Uggs *shudder*.)

Guess what? It’s only Thursday and I’m already fabulous.

March 25

This is a Wal-Mart $14 dolla dress, just like the Chambray dress that you all loved so much last week, but different. I am feelin' just a little bit of pressure today in fact, because you guys loved that look so much.

March 25

This time, I just embraced the inherent country look of the dress and ran with it. I added the moto jacket to keep it true to my own style. I honestly don’t think I have much I can’t add a moto jacket of some sort to.

March 25

Even without the jacket though, the style of the boots keeps it from being too costume-y. I just love the cut on these dresses and feel it’s so flattering. It also came in a red plaid, and maybe blue plaid, but I find I do best with solids and black and white. I love a black and white print or pattern.

March 25

The belt was actually Nathan’s tweak. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to go with a vintage western belt of a plain brown belt. I had the dress laid out with a plain belt, and Nathan said “Why not wear a western belt?” and that clenched it for me. Then we had a look through his collection of buckles for the perfect one. I knew which one I wanted all along of course!~ Texas!

March 25

And to stay with the theme, a bat skull and a bullet on a chain.

March 25

I know I’ve preached this before, but if you don’t have a set of needle nose pliers, a bag of cheapie jump rings and some cheap chain…get some. It opens up a world of possibilities. On longer lengths of chain when I don’t even bother to add a clasp, since I know I’m only customizing the piece for one or two wears and then I will change it again.

Yesterday I Got So Scared, I Shivered Like A Child

Thank you so much for all your kind words yesterday. I am definitely going to keep blogging for now. I don’t ever want to be a downer, but life is pretty hard right now if I’m being honest, and I think you know I do tend to be honest. And blogging brings me a sense of purpose and joy. It’s fun. If it ever stopped being fun, or caused more stress than happiness, I’d reevaluate, but for now, it’s one of my favorite things about life.

Also, for those of you who specifically said you love seeing thing re-mixed, over at Weardrobe, you can click on any item listed in an outfit (down under the photograph), and it will take you to a page that shows you every time that particular item has been worn and how. I think that's pretty cool! For instance, here are the three ways I've photographed this dress.

As is this outfit. Unlike yesterday’s semi-tragic effort, I love this outfit top to bottom.

March 23

That is the right jacket, the right cardigan and the right belt. For today anyway. This only the third appearance for this dress on the blog, but I’ve worn it at least five times since I got it, and never the same way twice. It was a great buy. It’s so versatile and the fact that it is reversible just doubles the versatility!

March 23

I bought this belt at my birthday, specifically to wear with this dress, but once I got it home, I didn’t feel like it was working. Then I saw a couple of you guys wear it this way, with the buckle turned to the back, and viola! It’s perfect!

March 23

Nathan commented on how much all the color in this cardigan (technically, this color is listed as amethyst heather on the tag and up close it has purples, blues and pinks) adds to the dress. It really feels Springy when paired with this.

March 23

Sorry for the huge accessories pic, but I wanted you to see some things. The pattern on the dress, both of the new necklaces I’ve just made and MY GOOSEBUMPS. It was cold. So cold. The bullet? It’s a “Winchester” and don’t think I didn’t giggle at length when I saw that. If you are a “Supernatural” fan, you’ll get it. But no spoilers please for the current season! I watch it on DVD and am perpetually a season behind. I know I should catch up, but I miss it every year. It’s a bummer. Because I love me some Winchesters.

Bruises Bigger Than Dinner Plates

I am not a huge fan of St Patrick’s Day. I’m not a big drinker, and contrary to what my name might lead you to believe, I am not Irish. I don’t like green, and I resent being told what to wear.

March 17

I wear a bit of green anyway, because you never know what kind of zealous nutcase you might run into, running around the office or wherever, gleefully pinching everyone not wearing green. (I cannot believe this is an acceptable practice, buy the way. I mean, what if I took to slapping everyone who was dressed sloppy on the last Friday in March every year, and called it “Stay Fabulous or Get Slapped Friday”? I feel like they deserve it, I shouldn’t have to look at that, and it seems like a more valid thing to physically assault someone over than a lack of green.*)

March 17

I feel like this dress has a lot of re-mix potential. I have several different pairs of shoes and sandals I think will be fun with it, but this particular ensemble (minus the necklaces, but I’ll discuss that later) seemed like the most obvious to me, and I wanted to start with the obvious and move forward. The cowboy boots and chambray run the risk of being to country, but not if you add the studded belt and biker jacket.

March 17

It wrinkles like crazy in the back, which is it’s only real fault, and I will have to iron it pretty much every time I wear it, and we all know how I feel about that. I am hoping that the sitting wrinkles are something Downy Wrinkle Releaser can take care of for me, but it’s looking doubtful. It’s cotton, but it thinks it’s linen.

March 17

These are both really nice necklaces, but not what I really wanted to wear. I wanted to wear my Isabella Wolf Fang Necklace and my Dharma Wheel. But I also don’t want to be pinched by aforementioned zealots.

*OK, maybe it's not fair to assault people for that either. But being told what to wear makes me super cranky. And I think “Stay Fabulous or Get Slapped Friday” might be a holiday we should seriously consider. We can keep the slapping light.

Whatever You Do, Don't Stop 'Til You're Through

OH SNAP!~ It got cold again. Par for the course for Spring, I know, but the weather predictions have been off the last two days and it makes getting dressed a lot harder when you have no idea what to expect.

March 11

I think I might be under a dollar on the cost per wear for this dress now. It was maybe 20 bucks, and I know I’ve worn it that many times. It works for the office, it works for the weekend, it dresses up, it dresses down. I love it with no jacket and my snakeskin gladiator sandals when it’s warm, and with boots and a jacket when it’s chilly.

March 11

I feel like out of all of my dresses I get the most use out of the floral prints. I could never have enough. I find them so easy to wear and mix and match.

March 11

Our dryer is broken and my laundry has reached critical mass, so we are going to kick it old school style at the laundry mat tonight, only this time we have ripped a DVD (Up in The Air) and put it on the net book. We’ve got a headphone splitter and plenty of quarters. Should be a good time.

Senator, Let's Be Sincere, As Much As You Can

I planned this entire outfit around new jewelry I wanted to wear.

Feb 22

For my birthday, Lara made me this bracelet, and I have not taken it off since. I love the combination of gold and silver tone and I love the way the wing weighs down the second chain so they fall at different lengths. I also love the way it goes with my collectible Buffy watch.

Feb 22

And then Sunday my friend Mikal brought over a chest full of old costume jewelry that had belonged to various members of her family. Some was hers, some her mothers, some her grandmothers, even her daughters. I combed through it (SO FUN) and she let me take pieces I liked! I got some really over the top stuff I cannot wait to wear, but I wanted to wear this beaded necklace and bunny pendant NOW.

Feb 22

The pendant I just dropped on a chain, but the beaded necklace was a part of a longer and much more over the top piece. I separated it down the middle and Mikal and I split it. She rocked her half as choker, which looked great, but I always feel like chokers are, well, choking me! So I added in some extra chain and split up the beads for an asymmetrical look. I also pulled that cuff from the box, but I guess I didn’t get a good picture of that. Another time, I swear.

Feb 22

The weather over the weekend was so warm I didn’t even need a jacket at times, but this week we are back to the cold. I am pretending it’s not happening and wearing this lightweight jacket, but it’s supposed to snow again. Not as much as last time, but it will be cold.

Feb 22

And you can see the length on that strap on my new bag in these pics. *Sigh*. That bag is so freaking perfect. I LOVE it.

Before I Fall in Love, I'm Preparing to Leave Her

I watched the BRIT awards last night. Highlights for me were all of the Geri Halliwell (look, she is self centered and obnoxious but I love her anyway), Lady Gaga, the Lily Allen opening number, Cheryl Cole looking fantastic and that amazing Robbie Williams Medley. I didn’t love Mel B’s hair. Girl, you are too old for that.

I love getting ahead and having 2 or 3 days worth of back-up pictures, because then, on days like today, when I am running SUPER late, it’s cool. No worries. I still have something to blog about. But then it feels really weird to be blogging about something I wore 3 days ago. This is what I wore on Monday…

Feb 15

I love that dress. It is cut to fit my body almost exactly. And it’s the perfect length for me. It’s just a Target dress, but it fits me like a much more expensive dress.

Feb 15

I just love the look of a nice, feminine dress and a cozy sweater (or two!) and boots. It is the perfect winter wardrobe for me.

Feb 15

It’s my last day in the office for the week! We get to take our birthdays off as a “floating holiday”. Nathan is taking me to see “Valentine’s Day”, which I assume will be super cheesy in the best way. I’m going to sleep late and watch too much TV.

He Made Me A Tape of Bootlegs and B-Sides

So it turns out there is a reason you guys don’t take pics in snow storms other than discomfort. I know, it seems so obvious now, the snow ruins the picture, but I swear I just didn’t think about it! I’m not going to bother with putting these on Weardrobe or Wardrobe Remix, but I feel like we are friends, and this blog is about more than showing off my outfits, so even though you can’t make out a lot of details, I’m going to post them anyway. If for no other reason than to keep up with my all black week and to say hi. Hi!

Feb 11

I’ve had a few questions about those socks. They do stay up all by themselves, I do not do a lot of adjusting during the day, but that may just be because I always wear them over leggings or tights and they have something to grip. As far as size, well, I don’t know any other way to let you know about the sizing than to just lay it all out there for you, so I will. My leg, right there where they are sitting, is 16 inches around and I feel like they have a good 2 or 3 inches of stretch left in them. They are tight enough to stay up, but not at all uncomfortable. And very warm.

Feb 11

It’s still coming down pretty hard. We are supposed to get about 4 inches or so over the course of the day. Which is nothing I know, but 4 inches more than normal. It’s really very pretty right now, and not all that bad on the roads*.

Stay safe and warm!

*OMG, you guys, people from Texas CANNOT drive in ice and snow. We don’t have the proper tires or skills. No one slows down and everyone is an idiot. Except all the people I know, and we are just better than everyone else is all.

And This is Where I Realize, My Trouble Comes With Bluest Eyes

My Edit wrote an amazing and honest post about the end of her first year as a fashion blogger. Highly recommended reading.

So I had an awesome dream last night. All of my awesome dreams are either sci-fi or have vampires or zombies in them. This one had both vampires and zombies. We (Nathan and I) were staying at a rural hotel (I know, that would never happen, but dreams are weird like that). The hotel was attacked one night by vampires. Oddly enough this attack was brief and the hotel staff and guests pretty much killed them all right quick. Then zombies attacked. We set fire to the zombies that had gotten in by dousing them with stuff from the bar and throwing matches at them. In my dreams, this is an acceptable way to kill zombies. Of course setting fire to zombies inside will lead to the building burning down, but lucky for us it was a multi building complex. We moved next door, took all the doorknobs off the doors so that the building was only accessible via deadbolt. Then we tore down the stairs and boarded up all the first floor windows. At some point some dude’s mom pretended she was going to kill herself, and instead she shot the dude standing next to her so I put a bullet between her eyes. The dude said it was cool though, because she was a jerk. In my dreams, apparently I am a cold blooded killer of both zombies and other people’s mom’s. Is it just me or is that a bit disturbing?

In I Got Dressed News, I woke up feeling uninspired due to both the shopping ban and the cold, so I decided to declare this a theme week. I don’t think I have ever done a theme week, but this is all black week. So there!~

February 10

I keep thinking I want to have this dress made into a skirt. What are your thoughts on that? It’s lined, so it would be a bit more expensive. But I think it might be nicer than always having to hide the top of the dress (which is too costume-y)

February 10

It’s 32 degrees so I’ve got on 2 pair of leggings. I have seen footage from some of the areas that are snowed in, and I have to be honest I don’t’ even really have the experience to draw from to have ANY idea what that must be like. At all. I hope you are warm and I hope you have plenty of food and water and books. And blankets!

February 10

I managed to get my hands on a couple of bottles of Mad As A Hatter from the OPI Alice in Wonderland tie in collection and…SWOON. The picture does it no justice. It is to die for. Glitter glitter glitter. I takes 2-3 coats to get this look and it tends to just peel off in sheets so removal is a snap!

Mad as a Hatter by OPI

Nathan took this random picture today as I was getting ready to get in the car and it’s just my lunch bag (I normally use a reusable one, but I left it at work) but I really liked it.

A Little Bit Stranger, A Little Bit Harder, A Little Bit Deadly

There seems to be much debate in the fashion blogosphere regarding comments. I’ve been reading a lot but not saying much. I don’t want to get too much into the whole thing here (Sally and her amazing readers cover it really well here) but I will speak to my personal feelings about comments. I like them. I admit, I get mostly positive ones here, and who doesn’t like a positive comment? I don’t care if it IS the same thing 20 people before you have already said, it’s nice when you say it, too. That said, I do get some negative ones. Sometimes I like to pull them out and address them in a later post. Sometimes I ignore them. Once or twice, they’ve made me really think. Sometimes they really bother me. But I’d rather have them once in a while than not have honest readers. And I love to get comments about my titles, which are song lyrics) as much as my clothes! I love when you guys get excited about that.

February 2

This dress is hands down my favorite silhouette for day wear. A short, floaty chiffon dress with a tank and leggings underneath mean you can see my shape, but not every bump. I feel confidant and pretty every time I wear this dress. I just wish I had 10 more just like it!

February 2

You know what I really like about wearing heels, and these boots in particular? The way they make everything jiggle just a little more when I walk. With every step, my thighs, my butt, my boobs, all the bits that make a lady a lady, wiggle and jiggle. I can almost hear the burlesque music in the background all day each time I so much as walk to the office kitchen for a cup of tea. Shake, Shake, Shake. It makes me feel sexier than just about anything else.

February 2

Saturday we went to see an art show, because our friends from Giggle Party were playing, and there was a full on punk rocker there. His motorcycle jacket was all studs and cones, so I went over to talk to him about it. I have some cones (and studs) that I bought a while back, but last time I tried to use them I got blisters and it was all in all too hard and unpleasant, but I’ve been wanting to put some on one or both of my biker jackets. He explained there was a very cheap tool that punched holes for the cones, and where to get it. So I’ve ordered that. Thanks Punk Rock Boy!

February 2

I’m forcing myself to wear something other than my Wendy B piece at least twice a week, since I own SO many perfectly wonderful pieces, but I got to tell you. I miss it when I wear something else. I just do.

I Wanna Be Desperate, I Wanna Be Desolate…I Wanna Be Depressed, Over You

Confession: I have wanted to wear this dress for a couple months, but have been too lazy to iron it. I finally got around to doing it last night. That is how much I don’t iron. Normally if something can’t be smoothed out with Downy Wrinkle Release, it’s dead to me. But I do have a few things I keep around, and this is one of them.

January 21

My great grandmother (my grandfather’s mother on my dad’s side) made the cardigan for my Grandmama when she was a young bride. It is crocheted and not knitted and was entered into the Texas State Fair competition. I don’t remember the story exactly, but I believe it was awarded a ribbon and then disqualified for being crochet. Whatever, State Fair Judges, it’s still awesome.

January 21

I’m having dinner tonight with friends I have not seen in a long time and we are going straight from the office to dinner so I’ll be in this for a while, which is why I went with cozy. I’m looking forward to it, they are awesome people. We are going to meet at this bar in town that makes something called “Winner Winner, Chicken Dinner” and it’s a tenderized and flattened chicken breast, breaded and pan friend and then served with this amazing gravy and...wait for it...Gouda mashed potatoes. SO GOOD. And they make their own potato chips with three dipping sauces. We are going to split the chicken dinner and have the chips too. Two times the potatoes! Yes! And yes, I totally pre-plan my meals out. Please tell me someone else does this. I look up the menu online up to a week before, even if I’ve been there before. I hate when restaurants have no menu online. Once a while back, we went to a new place on a double date, and I had pre-planned to order the mushroom risotto, and they were out of it and it really threw me for a loop. I recovered and ordered some very fine things instead but I will always hold it against them.

I wish I worked this pendant into my wardrobe more often. I got it at a multi-family yard sale this summer….for a quarter! It’s sterling and really heavy and gorgeous. And it was a quarter! It was the same yard sale that I got the black motorcycle jacket of awesomeness for Nathan for 20 bucks. That was a good yard sale.
