Budget Halloween

Normally I’m kind of a big spender at Halloween. I love dressing up and I love making costumes. This year I had very little money to work with, and to be honest, my spirits are kind of low as well, so my creative juices are running low. But despite all that, I ended up with a pretty awesome costume.

I’ve been reading a lot of Melissa Marr fairy books*, and as such, that was in the forefront of my mind. That said, I went to the Halloween super store one evening with no real plan in mind. I just knew that NOT dressing up is LAME and I wanted to spend very little.

These wings were so pretty, and only $11.00. So I took them home and figured I’d go from there.

Halloween

I added:
1. A formal dress I have passed over for re-wearing at least a dozen times now. It had a buble hem and I just didn’t care for it anymore. So I hacked off the end, which worked really well as there were three layers of fabric, all different textures under there which looked really nice.

2. A petticoat from last year 50’s day costume, I took about 2 tiers off, by ripping them

3. A sweater I used to love, but that had holes and had seen better days. I cut off the bottom, and made all the edges raw. I added slits in the back to insert the straps on the wings into so that they were not visible, since I felt that look kind of weird.

4. Black tights

5. Ankle boots

6. A ton of bird/bat skull jewelry and such that I already owned.

Halloween

I managed the wings OK both night I wore them. They got caught in doorways and I had to fold myself into the car pretty carefully but it was not so bad overall.

The necklaces included this awesome bat skull but the same maker as my tiny bird skulls...

Halloween

It’s little jaw is hinged and moveable.

As a finishing touch, I made this awesome hand piece to wear a fourth skull I just couldn’t make work with the three already around my neck.

*I’m not normally a fairy person. At all. But MM makes them dark and urban and real.

Flashback

So the outfits for the “Decades” dress up party came out great. The closest to an outfit shot of Nathan I got was this:

Dec 6, Day 61 reject

But he looked great. UGLY sweater, old school Docs, Morrissey tee, scruffy beard and all.

Here is my outfit in all it’s glory though:
Decades Party. The 90s.

That jacket is a jacket I bought when I was 16, with a paycheck from the GAP. I was so excited when I got it, I wore it right away. In August. In Texas.

For me, the thing that really made the costume though was the thermal underwear shirt:
Decades Party. The 90s.

Everything but the earrings (Love Erin Designs), boots (Steve Madden) I dont have my Docs anymore) and the thermal (Wal-mart) is vintage. The jacket is 16 years old. 16!~

Happy Halloween

We normally have a big to-do at work and decorate our floors and have a HUGE contest.

But not this year.

I’m pretty bummed about it, but I’ll get over it. Nathan and Lara are performing in a mock Goth band at a couple parties tonight and that will be fun.

We were at least aloud to wear Halloween inspired clothing!~

Remembering my shopaholic rules: I am aloud 1 piece from each new Go International or designer collection from Target. And I will only buy one if I really want it and can use it. This is very different from my past behavior of basically buying any and everything in allll of the releases I liked and fit.

This jacket is my selection from the current collection.

And I love it.

I’ve had this shirt for YEARS

So back at the height of my addiction, I collected Tokidoki for Lesportsac bags. I can’t even tell you how many I had. I still have quite a few, but of all of them this is my favorite, because I love Halloween.

Please click through to see them larger if you are curious about the print. It’s supa cute.

I made this necklace a few years back with PMC (precious metal clay, basically clay, that when you fire it, turns to sterling silver LIKE MAGIC), and I love it. I’ve made a few more as gifts and I just really think it’s a great design. I’m very proud of it.

I did not make the earrings, but they are fabulous. And were cheap. You can only kind of see this, but the hoops are made to look like little bones. SUPA cute.
