Back in Black (and White)

And so it begins. I have had super short weeks at work the past couple of weeks and it all ends here! Back to 5 days in a row, all week, every week. It’s OK though. I feel rested, I saw my best friend and my house is clean. I ended the weekend yesterday by having Bill come over and watch my most alarming anime (Please Twins!) with me.

This dress is another mark item. I tend to give mark things mixed reviews, but I guess I have better luck with them than a lot of people. They tend to be a good fit on me. And I love black and white. I am a huge fan of that tie dyed scarf as well, and look forward to pairing it with many more things over the Fall and Winter.

My hair. It’s getting pretty long, I know. I think I probably need to go in and have the ends trimmed, but I have to admit, I love when it gets this long. So far this seems to be as long as I can manage to get it without breakage. Any tips to get it longer? Am I crazy for wanting it longer? I wash twice a week, use sulfate free shampoo, condition and rinse with cool water. I use a cream for protection from heat styling, and since I only wash twice a week, I only blow dry and straighten that often. I dye it maybe once every 4 months, to cover the tons of grey.

I love these earrings! Alannah got them in Chicago at H&M and they are so long they go past my shoulders. I love the way they get tossed along with my hair when I flip it back. They are a bit overpowering though, and they have to be worn alone, without necklaces. Even the tiny diamond choker I have looked silly with them! They mean business.

You are not crazy to want you hair longer. If my hair got that long I would just let it grow and grow, but mine maxes out about 2 inches shorter than your is right now.

What sulfate free shampoo do you use? And do you like it? I only wash 1-2/week as well, and I would love to switch to a greener shampoo.

Tina,

I have used the Shea Butter, the Coconut Milk and the Vanilla Silk and Nathan uses the Tea Tree Oil. It's about 7 bucks a bottle and they are small, but it's doable for me because of the rare washing, so it should work for you too! I get it at CVS and/or Target.

I love you outfit. One of the things I've noted about women with long hair is that they tend to wear it up most of the time. This protects your hair from the elements and also from constantly rubbing against your clothes, which weakens it due to friction and also because most clothing materials (wool, cotton, etc) tend to dry out your hair. Since the ends are the oldest and most fragile part of the hair, this can lead to breakage. Then again, longer hair is a lot less fun if you only wear it up!

How can you possibly get away with washing your hair 2x a week? I have to wash it every morning or else it is a gross ball of grease...yuck. I envy your locks

Those are incredible earrings! I love the all-black ensemble. I love my short pixie hair, but there's a big 'ol part of me that wants a long mane of hair like yours. Lovely!

You don't have to dye it very often! Impressive.

Moni, I agree, I don’t get the point in having long hair only to wear it up all the time. Plus I suspect all the pins and ponytail holders do more harm than good!

Linda, Maybe I should do a post about it. It’s a commitment. You just stop washing so often, and FOR MOST PEOPLE, but not all, your hair evens out. The reason most people’s hair gets so oily and dirty so fast is because we wash it, stripping it of its natural oils and it over produces in its fight to keep up with all that stripping. I use hair powder a lot. My hair evened out so that I could wash every other day really quickly and then I just kept pushing until I hit my limit. It is dirty for a week or two and I won’t lie, kind of gross, but I got through it, and the free time I get is so worth it (it takes over an hour to wash, dry and style this mess)

Candycane, That bump I do? 3 years ago I cut bangs and am STILL growing them out. I feel you.

I have had super long hair- down to my rear in fact! I have found that your hair reaches a point where it seems to just not grow at all, and will stay that way for months even, but if you just give it time it will eventually go past that point. For me I think it was slightly shorter than your hair is now, so if you can keep waiting it out it will probably grow. How often do you trim your hair? I'll be honest, when my hair was super long I really only trimmed it twice a year, although I never heat styled it and wore it up a lot so it was in decent shape. I washed it daily though (just the roots)

I am trying to stop washing my hair so much now- my poor locks have been so abused! My problem is that I go to the gym 5 nights a week after work and I always wash it after exercise. I am going to just bite the bullet and stop washing it after the gym some nights, the goal is to get to 2-3 washings a week. I think a powder of sorts might help, but it needs to be dark of course. What do you use? I think I also need to finally invest in a decent leave in conditioner.

Long hair is fun, but it's a bit of a lifestyle change. My breaking point was when it got too heavy- I had my hair balled up and it was still wet one day and when I turned my head the weight of all that hair actually caused me physical discomfort. It got caught on bushes when I walked past them always got caught in seats when I sat down in class if I wore it down. It was a hassle for sure but I kind of miss it. I just got a trim and even though it is long in the back it feels so short!
