Your Skin Is Black Metallic

It’s been raining since yesterday afternoon. It’s not awesome when you have to get out in it, but it sure was nice last night when I was sleeping. I love the sound of the rain when it’s time to sleep. It’s so soothing to hear from your nice warm bed.

The rain makes for bad a dark morning and a dark morning makes for difficult photos, but I think we got a couple we can work with.

January 29

I love this hoodie. I got it at the height of my Tokidoki crazy and at the time I thought it would be the thing I got the least use out of, but in the end I wear it more than I carry any of the bags. It’s warm, and a great shape and size, and for some reason, I can wear it around the house and it won’t end up covered in dog hair*.

January 29

The print on the hoodie was called “cammo” or something, and I guess it does sort of look like camouflage from far away but close up it’s all bullets and rainbows, skulls and stars with faces in the background.

January 29

I made a necklace from one of the Tokidoki zipper pulls off one of my bags, because this little fanged flower was one of my favorite characters and I thought it was a shame to waste such a cutie on a zipper pull no one looked at.

January 29

I don’t have any plans tonight at all. Last week and weekend I was really busy, and it was fun. This weekend I am hoping to mostly just relax, clean and watch TV. I know it sounds boring and lame but I’m looking forward to it. What are your big (or small) weekend plans?

*I do not wear my regular clothes in my house, ever. When I have friends over I have special house jeans I wear, but my normal nice clothes come off the second I get home. I change into pajama bottoms and a tee, tank or hoodie. I love my dog to bits, but he sheds like crazy and I prefer he not have a relationship with my clothes at all. He is a cutie though...

Sometimes I Wish. Sometimes I Wish I Was Like Mariella

Sorry for the silence yesterday. My team at work moved suites and as a cost saving measure, we did it ourselves, so I basically wore a grubby tee shirt, flared leg jeans and sneakers, if you can even imagine that. I normally wouldn’t leave the house like that so I for sure wasn’t going to blog about it. I felt sloppy and blah.

But today is better!

January 28

Check it out. I totally wore the same shirt in a different color pattern on Monday. We are still unpacking boxes and it was one of the only blouses in my wardrobe that wasn’t’ chiffon and was work appropriate. So I went with it.

January 28

And I’m still carrying that bag, and still doing it because my lunch, which is exactly the same lunch today as it was Tuesday, fits in it. What can I say? I’m working really hard this week and as a result I have a case of the lazy when it comes to my handbag.

January 28

I haven’t worn this Erin Fetherston jacket in a really long time and I couldn’t tell you why. Well, I could. I mean let’s face it; I have an awful lot of jackets to choose from. I have a super whole lot more jackets than any girl from Dallas, Texas really needs. Because I love jackets. And I neglect a fair bit of them because I have so many. So, I’m sorry little velvet jacket, you are an awesome jacket, and it’s not your fault that I happen to prefer anything moto inspired to blazers right now.

And I am not going to wear it buttoned pretty much at all today, but I know one of you is going to be curious about how it looks buttoned up, because that’s how you guys roll. So here you go:

January 28

I hope you have an awesome day. I’m going to go listen to the Ke$ha CD my wonderful next door neighbor made me and see what all the fuss is about.

Come Down Now, They’ll Say...

I promise this is not going to turn into a dream journal, but I actually had pretty much the best dream ever last night. We had watched an episode of “Look Around You” with Edgar Wright* in it, and my reaction had been basically “Oh my gosh! Edgar Wright!!!”. Because, well, I love him, and he doesn’t do a lot of acting. And as a result of that I had a dream that I was at a party, and Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright were there. We got to talking and we decided that we should write a show together, and so we did. It was a comedy show, a bit absurdest, about office and apartment life. It was an excellent show, starring Simon and I. I cannot think of a better dream. I hope I have it again.

And then I woke up, and had a bagel. That was less interesting.

January 26

I have had this dress for a very, very long time. I had it when I weighed approximately 50 pounds more than I do now and it fit then and it fits now. I don’t understand how that works other than a great cut and very stretchy fabric. But it does.

January 26

I love these colors, and I love them on me.

January 26

The shopping ban (January through the end of February) is going pretty well. By which I mean I haven’t’ cheated. (I did try, once at Banana Republic, when they had a gorgeous $250 leather bag with a plastic/resin chain handle on sale for all of $50. But I didn’t.) It's not fun. It's been really hard, and I don't like it. But it's good for me, I know. My concern now is really more for the end of February than anything else. Money is really tight, and the truth is shopping ban or no, I don’t have any to spare. So I’m hoping that come the end, I can still control myself.

I don’t think I would have worn this jacket nearly as often if not for the ban, since jackets are my weakness and I would bet almost anything I’d have another new one by now. So that’s a good thing, getting more use out of what I do have.

January 26

I know that bag has nothing to do with the rest of the outfit, but you know what? It had room for my lunch in it.** And as I am perpetually late, this appealed to me this AM. I needed to just pack it and GO.

*Edgar Wright is the writer/director/awesome sauce responsible in part for such things as the UK series “Spaced” and the movies “Shaun of the Dead” and “Hot Fuzz”.
** A PB&J, raw broccoli and carrots with low fat ranch dip, a pudding cup, and an afternoon snack ( 100 calorie pack of cheez-its).

Don't Sew Beelines to Anybody's Hide

I had a really weird dream this weekend. I dreamed that Nathan and I and everyone we knew lived in these big government housing buildings a lot like university dorm rooms. I’m not sure why, or what had happened, other than we were all really poor. We had all the same stuff, just in a different place. And everyone worked some shift job that paid very little, but we weren’t all that sad about it. And since everyone was poor, the thing to do was go over to someone’s room and watch a DVD, because we still had our DVDs, and at least your friends had something different to watch, and none of us had cable.

So Nathan was working his shift, and I had friends over, watching a DVD, and we were trying to scrape together enough money for a frozen pizza. But what was really interesting was that I was working on a swap. I had organized a clothing swap that worked entirely through the mail. You mailed me your measurements and style and a few items, and I sent you back that many items that someone else had sent in, according to your tastes and size. In the dream it seemed really easy, but of course that would be a really difficult and daunting task.

Anyway, I woke up. And Nathan made pancakes, and then I went to Laura’s house and we worked on her Spring wardrobe. It was good times.

January 25

I woke up super late today. I didn’t sleep well last night and that always makes it hard, so I was grateful for easy pieces I knew I could just throw on and know would work together.

January 25

I wanted to wear my new Target boots with this, but I’m still having issues with the insoles. I have tried putting a good insole in, but I’m going to have to get out the big guns and get a serious insole today. And if that doesn’t work I’ll try the cobbler, because they are such good boots outside of the one flaw. That one very painful, distracting flaw.

January 25

So, what did you dream this weekend?

Lean On Me, When You're Not Strong

I’m not going to do a personal style update today. Instead I’m going to tell you about someone in need and ask you to help.

From Wendy Brandes Jewelry Blog…

“I’ve got bad news for you. Blogger Janet of Je Ne Sais Quoi (also known by her blog name, iheartfashion) suffered a tragic loss this week when her husband took his own life. He had been unemployed for a period of time. Janet has two children, ages 7 and 9. She needs some financial help. You can donate any amount of money to her via Paypal by clicking on the “donate now” button in the upper right corner of this blog.

I know everyone is tapped out from donating to Haiti-related causes, so I’m giving you the chance to donate and get something nice back. If you buy one of my Teeny Genie necklaces for $50 plus shipping and applicable taxes, I will donate $35 from every purchase to Janet. Valentine’s Day is coming up. Get an adorable necklace for you or someone you love and help Janet at the same time.”

Teeny-Genie-with-dime-567x1024

Please note:
• Genies will cost $61.40 for U.S. priority shipping with delivery confirmation, excluding taxes.
• Additional taxes will be automatically charged to New York State residents.
• I will have to calculate shipping for international locations. After I receive your order, I will figure it out and send you an invoice with the total.
• The genies will start going out Monday and I’ll let you know when yours is on the way.
• I am low on genie-size jewelry boxes and would prefer to send without to keep costs down. If you MUST have a box because this is a gift, send me a note. Otherwise, assume your genie will be free-range. If I send you a jewelry box and use larger shipping packaging, I will be donating $30 to Janet instead of $35."

Please go here to buy the necklace. You can also go here to donate as little or as much as you can. As some of you know, my husband has been out of work for 13 months, so this hits very close to home. I know how hard it can be, both emotionally and financially. I can’t imagine what it would be like if I lost him because of it. If we can help her even a little, make the burden just a little lighter, and the days a little less unbearable and dark, we have to try. Personally, I don’t have much, but every little bit helps, so please donate if you can.

I Wanna Be Desperate, I Wanna Be Desolate…I Wanna Be Depressed, Over You

Confession: I have wanted to wear this dress for a couple months, but have been too lazy to iron it. I finally got around to doing it last night. That is how much I don’t iron. Normally if something can’t be smoothed out with Downy Wrinkle Release, it’s dead to me. But I do have a few things I keep around, and this is one of them.

January 21

My great grandmother (my grandfather’s mother on my dad’s side) made the cardigan for my Grandmama when she was a young bride. It is crocheted and not knitted and was entered into the Texas State Fair competition. I don’t remember the story exactly, but I believe it was awarded a ribbon and then disqualified for being crochet. Whatever, State Fair Judges, it’s still awesome.

January 21

I’m having dinner tonight with friends I have not seen in a long time and we are going straight from the office to dinner so I’ll be in this for a while, which is why I went with cozy. I’m looking forward to it, they are awesome people. We are going to meet at this bar in town that makes something called “Winner Winner, Chicken Dinner” and it’s a tenderized and flattened chicken breast, breaded and pan friend and then served with this amazing gravy and...wait for it...Gouda mashed potatoes. SO GOOD. And they make their own potato chips with three dipping sauces. We are going to split the chicken dinner and have the chips too. Two times the potatoes! Yes! And yes, I totally pre-plan my meals out. Please tell me someone else does this. I look up the menu online up to a week before, even if I’ve been there before. I hate when restaurants have no menu online. Once a while back, we went to a new place on a double date, and I had pre-planned to order the mushroom risotto, and they were out of it and it really threw me for a loop. I recovered and ordered some very fine things instead but I will always hold it against them.

January 21

I wish I worked this pendant into my wardrobe more often. I got it at a multi-family yard sale this summer….for a quarter! It’s sterling and really heavy and gorgeous. And it was a quarter! It was the same yard sale that I got the black motorcycle jacket of awesomeness for Nathan for 20 bucks. That was a good yard sale.

Traveled Down The Road and Back Again

I just want to take a moment and say Thank You to everyone who is reading. Everyone blogs for different reasons. I’m not sure I can pinpoint the reason I do it, but I know a lot of it is you. Your words of encouragement that pour in throughout the day are sometimes the only thing that makes a bad day bearable. And even if you don’t comment, the fact that you stopped by and read, well, it’s nice. It’s really nice to be heard. So Thank You, so much.

At first glance this outfit looks pretty tame. Just a black dress, leggings and jacket.

January 20

The interesting details are in the leggings, which I had to get a better view of for you.

January 20

POW!~ The pattern is much more obvious in real life. They don’t blend at all. They have an unmistakable metallic sheen to them, and the “scales” are much more of a mocha/copper color than comes across in the photos. Kelly gave me these for Christmas and I’ve been kind of stressing about what to wear them with. I’m not sure why though. This morning it seemed so obvious I could wear them with just about anything solid black (although I have less of that than I should!).

January 20

I moved my Isabella to a different chain today because the length was better for this outfit. Your jewelry belongs to you. Feel free to change the little things or the big, to make it work for you. I have a habit of rearranging necklaces and bracelets after a few months use, and it’s like having something new. And after today, I can put her right back where I got her, on her lovely, super long chain.

I’m still oiling the Hayden-Harnett bag, but I gave up on carrying it daily. It’s just exhausting. All day long you have to be super conscious of the bag, keeping it out of harm’s way. Nathan and I went to Wendy’s for lunch yesterday and trying to find a place to set it down was almost impossible. And in the car yesterday, because of the dark wash jeans (and the fall foliage in the floorboard) it was just as tough. So I’m taking a break and carrying the Steven bag for now. It’s much more easygoing.

With My Big Black Boots and an Old Suitcase

So I think the bag is darkening. I do. And it only needed 2 leather wipes last night as opposed to 6 the day before. I’m going to stop oiling the inside of the flap so I can watch my progress. But I will basically be spending the day today holding it away from my jeans. I am SUCH a goober. Last week, I noticed a dark spot across the bottom back edge of the bag and I cleaned it off for the most part, but you know what did it? THESE JEGGINGS*. I just didn’t think about it. I’m normally very smart about things like that, but I spaced. And then I did it again today. Oy.

January 19

We got to wear jeans today! Yay!~ Because we have to move a bunch of boxes out of a conference room this afternoon. Boo.

January 19

I always think “I can’t wear red lips”, but I’m wearing it today and looking at the pics I so can. It just has to be a good skin week, ha!~ I’ve got on Cover Girls Outlast Lipstain (you know I love them!) in #440 and I’ve topped it with the sheer pineapple juice gloss from Bath and Body Works (which is just gold shimmer, no color, and I love it, and I think they discontinued it.)

January 19

*They are dark wash and I’ve never washed them. I wash jeans when they can walk themselves to the washer and not before. Part of that is because I am lazy, and part of that is because it makes your clothes last longer to wash them only when they really need it. Underpants and are excluded from this theory.

I Let the Melody shine, Let it Cleanse My Mind, I Feel Free

I hope you had a wonderful weekend. I had a pretty good one myself. I went to a couple of parties, got a haircut (by which I mean, had the dead ends trimmed, you know how I do) had some friends over to watch excessive amounts of Dollhouse and topped it off last night by watching Julie & Julia with my sweetheart.

The weather has been great. We’ve had the heat off, and last night we took the electric blanket off the bed for the week. We are expecting some temps in the 70s even! I jumped at the chance to wear this tunic again. It was hands down my best score at the swap, and the fact that I also grabbed this jacket, which is the perfect cut to show off the figure flattering cut of the tunic is a great bonus.

January 18

I don’t think the light let the pictures really captured this, but those are my latex leggings. I actually need to do laundry and am out of regular leggings. I briefly considered not wearing this combo, but then I thought, why not? Black leggings are black leggings, these just have a bit more pizzazz to them!

January 18

That bag is huge, and a great shape, but made from this really natural sort of leather. (Nathan said last night that it feels like skin, by which he means people skin. And as creepy as that is, it does. It is so super soft and luxurious.) But it is like a stain magnet. I have not ever carried it much, because of that. And in fact I think I go on and on about it ever time I DO carry it. Last night I treated it with leather wipes, and it took 6 wipes to get the entire bag really well oiled. 6! But I thought about it and maybe I just need to really commit to oiling it every night for a while, perhaps that way I can speed the patina process way up. Is that a crazy idea?

January 18

The necklace I am wearing is a reworking of this necklace

Nov 25

I got bored, as I often do, and removed all the bears from the chain, worked up a pattern with some turquoise beads and had a do over.

January 18

The other necklace was more delicate, and maybe more wearable even, but this one feels more fun, and more substantial, and I like substantial.

No More Dramas Leave Mascara On My Pillow

You know what? I don’t think that this is the best lead photo for showcasing my outfit, but it sure is a good one for showcasing my smile. I smiled right back at me just looking at it, so I thought I’d smile at you too, cause I just like you so much.

January 15

Here is a better one for showcasing the outfit.

January 15

This is one of those rare and elusive outfits that I will wear to work today, then wear out tonight. I’m going to a party at a friend’s house. He also happens to be my duplex neighbor, so I don’t have to go very far, which is super nice. I’ll try not to be late.

January 15

I know yesterday I was all “I won’t wear a denim jacket with jeans” or whatever, but it turns out I’m kind of a liar, cause I will, and can, and did!~ I noticed this morning that the dark bits of this jacket matched the wash of these jeans, and I thought about it, and decided they are so different that it’s not against “the rules”. I quite like them together!

January 15

I think this is probably my favorite of my husband’s thrift finds, ever. This summer I found a thick, sturdy almost brand new black leather biker jacket that fits him like it was tailored for him at a yard sale for $20.00. That’s my favorite second hand find I’ve ever scored. I really hope he will let me photograph him in it for the blog some day but he seems really opposed to being on the blog, which is a shame, cause he is SO PRETTY.

Weardrobe

So I joined Weardrobe. I am not super sure how it all works yet, but I'd love to be able to follow you and keep up with all of you. Any tips? Do you mind leaving me a link to your Weardrobe?

Here is Me

I’m Not Gonna Teach Him How To Dance With You

And I’m calling that a week of wearing the same jacket. I should just pretend I set myself a style challenge or something. I won’t wear it tomorrow because I wore it last Friday. Plus, since it’s blue denim, I can’t really wear it with jeans. Well, I suppose I CAN, but I WON’T.

January 14

Other than not wearing it with jeans I feel like I’m hard pressed to find something I don’t like it paired with. It’s turned out to be a really versatile piece. I checked this morning and they do still have it in stock, it’s called the “Coquette Denim Jacket” and mine is a size medium if that helps with sizing questions. (Not gonna lie, looking at the Forever XXI site during a 2 month shopping ban just about made me faint. I got in, found what I wanted and got out, but not before noticing that they now have this jacket in a black faux leather. Had I not been on a ban I would have gotten one, and knowing that because it’s Forever XXI, they won’t have it after the ban is kind of hard. But I’ll live.)

January 14

Nathan says he doesn’t like the larger sized pictures. I do. So I compromising and using one, maybe two large pictures and then keeping the others the small/medium size. What are your thoughts?

That’s Like Hypnotizing Chickens

Lollerskates. I am clearly facing directly into the noon day sun in these pictures. I was trying so hard not to squint, I swear, but despite my best efforts you are being treated to the Squinty McGee series today.

Oh Hai thur Squinty McGee.
January 13

Suz asked what this jacket looks likes zipped up (minus a bulky hoodie as before) so this is for her. Also I might wear this jacket every day this week. Don’t put it past me. We’ll see.

January 13

A question for all the other ladies who scored these boots. I’m actually having a problem with them. The right boots seems to have something weird going on under the foot bed. Like arch support, but smack in the middle of the shoe. It’s painful, and it’s weird. I tried prying the insole out but was unable. Anyone else experience this? Do you think a shoe repair place could help or are they a lost cause? I will be SO SAD if they are a lost cause and might very well replace them. They are perfect otherwise.

*Squint squint*

Just a Second, It’s My Favorite Song They’re Gonna Play

I have two outfits for you today. Yesterday the camera died, and as a result we ended up with all of two pictures, one of which was not horrible, but certainly not good. The light was terrible. But I really liked the outfit so I saved the one terrible shot to post with another outfit.

January 11

I won’t terrorize you with a larger size, but I did love the look. I am so in love with that denim jacket. As I’ve mentioned before I have always liked the idea of denim jackets but never really found one that worked for my style. This one is perfect. I just wish it came in black denim as well.

And today. I’m happier with my pictures today but not overly happy. We are still learning the right lighting and such for the new camera. But I’m less impressed with today’s ensemble. It seems a bit…tame.

January 12

I woke up this morning not feeling well and am running slow and feeling icky, so the fact that I got dressed at all is impressive I guess. And I'm comfortable, plus, that is ONE jacket, ladies and gents. One. I am chilly but I refused to wear a second.

Janaury 12

Linda asked what the story was with this bag. And I’m sorry to say there isn’t really one to tell. It was a gift for my fifth anniversary (back in the salad days when everyone had a job and plenty of money all the time), so it’s about 6 and a half years old. When I pulled it out last week I thought “Oh, I forgot I had this bag” and then took it into the bedroom where Nathan said “Oh, I had forgotten about that bag”. So that tells you how often I carry it. I carried it non stop when I got it, for a good couple years. It’s a great bag, I just have a lot of bags. Not as many as some, but probably more than a girl needs, and YET, I am 99% sure that when people start asking what I want for my birthday, I’m going to point out a handbag I want.

And On The North Pole, I'll Ice You, Son.

So here is the deal. It’s 17 degrees here in Dallas with a wind chill of 4. I know that’s warm for some of you (and I do not envy you) but for us, that’s actually really cold. I don’t own a coat that’s warm enough to handle it. So I’ve done the best I can, basically, to brace myself for the cold and remain as un-dumpy looking as possible. The layers today? Not necessarily what I would have gone with stylistically, but warm. And that’s really all I cared about.

January 8

I am not wearing either jacket indoors, and I have the hoodie open so you can see my tee. But it was far too cold to show you that today, so you’ll just have to trust me!

I’m wearing the Mossimo Katherine Boots of Supreme Value and Style from Target today as recommended by the lovely Hillary. They are awesome. They are a wee bit tight today, but that’s because I am wearing 3 pairs of socks, leggings and denim leggings.

January 8

The leather!~ And the styling! For $49.99! I have never seen such a good deal on everyday wearable leather boots before. As far as I know they are impossible to get in stores at this point but they seem to still have a good range of sizes in black and brown online. These were the last new thing I bought before the shopping ban, and they are not a bad way to go out.

This Is the Part Where We Fall In Love

(Did you guys notice the improvement in the quality of my pictures? We started using the Rebel. Nathan said I don’t need a lens; I need to be not lazy and learn to use it. Nathan is taking the pics for now, until I have time to learn to use the remote and take them myself, and close ups are really hard to do, but the pictures are much better. Big thanks to my Brother-In-Law Bobby who gave it to us.)

My Isabella Necklace arrived. Thank you to everyone who bought something, and thank you to Alannah for the Christmas money, and thank you to The Fabulous Wendy Brandes for the amazing craftsmanship.

The experience is amazing right from the start. The box the necklace comes in is gorgeous.

January 7

January 7
(yes. My mug has a picture of a cat. In glasses. In a basket. It’s from Awesometown.)

And it’s hard to really convey how nice the piece is. The thing I am most struck by other than the amazing detailing is the weight. It is so heavy, in a good way. It’s delicious.

January 7

The details on the snout and the fur are not really something I could capture on film properly, in my opinion. They are amazing. This is such a gorgeous creature. It’s stamped on one the underside of the claw with a “925” and the inside with “Wendy Brandes”. It rolls freely on the bar in its mouth. I can’t really say enough how nice the piece is. It’s just gorgeous. If you have a chance to get something by Wendy, it is worth every penny.

Anyway. I got dressed. This is one of my favorite outfits in a while actually!

January 7

I’m actually maybe rushing to get this post done so I can get to reading that book for the rest of my lunch break.

January 7

The best part of the layering in this outfit is the little butt flap on the tunic.

January 7

I love it!~

January 7

I did a little bit of High/Low mixing with my necklaces today. The Buddha disc* is a charm Nathan found on the ground outside on the patio at Club Dada. It was free and appears to have been walked on or maybe even driven over. But he picked it up and dusted it off and gave it to me and I put it on a chain. And then of course the Isabella Wolf Fang is by Wendy.

*ETA Suz says it's called a "dharma wheel", thanks, Suz!
