A Girl Who Is Bespectacled

So, I got new glasses.

They are Ray Bans, and just what I was looking for. Nathan calls the style “haute nerdy”. I think he’s nailed it.

Buying new glasses is a big deal. I’ve been wearing glasses since I was six months old, so I’ve gotten pretty good at choosing new frames. There is more to consider than you might think. New frames can change the shape of your face. They can change way your haircut looks. (In fact I’ve been holding off deciding on a haircut until I got my new frames and adjusted to them.) They can even change the way your eyebrows look. But more than that, they affect your entire wardrobe. Glasses are an accessory, they just happen to be one that some of us wear every single day. They need to blend into the wardrobe you have now and you need to consider what direction they might take your wardrobe in. I know that might seem like a lot of power to attribute to such a small accessory, but it does hold true. Your glasses can have a ripple effect on the rest of your wardrobe. That can be a good or bad thing.

When I choose new frames I try and consider several things:

1. How do these look on my face? Do they go with the shape of my face? Are they flattering?
2. How do they go with my hair?
3. Do they go with my current make up? If not, what changes will need to be made (this is mostly a concern with colored frames, like the turquoise Gucci ones I wore a few years back)
3. How do they go with my wardrobe? Will they blend seamlessly in? What direction might they take it?
4. Can I love these for 3-4 years?

Never, ever rush into choosing frames. This leads to disaster 99.9% of the time. Trust me. Stop and think. Take pictures of yourself in the frames so you can see the way you look (often people who need glasses cannot see themselves in the store mirror in try on frames). Take a friend with you and listen to what they say, but make your own decision.

I’m excited about these frames. I love the way they look on my face and with the color of my hair. I love the size of them. I’m excited to see what kind of style changes we might make together.

I completely love how these glasses look on you! Good pick :)

And you are spot on about the seriousness of picking out the perfect frame. Although I primarily wear contacts, my most recent pair of glasses to approximately eleventy hundred hours to choose.

Yay! Fellow Ray-Ban wearer! You're absolutely right about how important it is to choose frames and you expressed it much better than I've ever been able to. Until really a couple of years ago, I always rushed into buying frames (because I was too embarrassed to linger in front of the mirror and ask for opinions) and I never wore them! Now I just take my time and almost never wear my contacts. Spot on! (And you look great)

I agree that the colour of the frames looks perfect with your hair and skin tone, and the shape really flatters your face. It's so cool that you chose something so different from your past frames too (I'm so used to seeing the narrower style on you and these are a nice change).

I always think you do a flawless job picking out frames for yourself! I can't think of a single pair that I didn't care for--they've all looked fantastic! I did really love those turquoise ones too. One day I want to get some frames that really stand out like that!

I wish you'd posted a little glasses timeline in this post... now I'm trying to recall some of your older frames but I can only go back about 5 previous styles in my head!

I'm a crazy person about glasses but I buy them from Zennioptical which is uber cheap but quality so I have 7 pairs that I rotate through constantly.

I use them like mood rings and I agree with the your points about them totally changing how your face/hair/eyebrows/outfit looks!

I know what you mean about trying glasses on and not being able to see what you look like! That was always beyond frustrating for me.

It's evident that you put a lot of thought and consideration into choosing these, and it totally shows! These are perfection on you!

Those glasses look fantastic on you! I too have been wearing glasses since I was little. I recently bought a pair of frames in bright pink, but I haven't been courageous enough to wear them outside the house. They're kind of a bold look, but I'm kind of a bold girl. I think you've encouraged me to break them out in public!

Great frames. They look awesome. I am so nervous about buying glasses, and I always make Blokey come meet me. He always likes the most expensive pair, too.
Next time, I'm going to take pictures of myself in multiple frames, and then come back after I get a chance to digest my options.

I love the new frames! I always envy one of my co-blogger's extensive collection of glasses. Since I usually wear my contacts, I can't really justify more than one pair of glasses.

You are SO cute in those new glasses! I'd say by now you have perfected the art of choosing just the right frames for yourself. :)

Those are great! I am about due for a new pair, and I'm hoping that this time I don't realize immediately after purchase that I've just gotten the female version of my husband's glasses.

I second the Zenni Optical idea. I have about 7 or 8 pairs that I am able to change through my wardrobe, which I like because then I can get a little crazy and do things like buy pink or green glasses.

But I might just splurge with my vision benefits this year and get some ray ban frames too........super hot.

Yes, yes, yes, yes. I completely agree with all of this. I think it is CRAZY when people go to get new glasses and just quickly pick a pair out.

Your new specs look amazing! I've been wanting a tortoise pair for a while now so these are making me get that itch even more! :)

I love those frames, and they really suit your face.

I totally understand! I've been wearing glasses since I was 6 and you have to be really careful in what you pick. I never thought of them as accessories though, just an inconvenience and poor vision.

These are great though and very 'nerd chic'

They really are some great frames.

I have 2 different ones that give a completely different look and vibe. You're right. There's more to it than choosing a pair and walking out the door.

Oh, you don't have to tell me either about how important the right glasses can be. I always tend to go for quite a chunky frame, because I have a very round face. And bright colours, preferably red, hot pink or bright purple! To me they are even more than an accessory, without them I feel naked...
