BLARGH

Oh my gosh. This is just bad. Everything about it is bad.

September 14

I got that dress from Newport News. It has been nothing but trouble. I should have returned it, but I didn’t. It’s paper thin and unlined. It required some extensive tailoring. And it still doesn’t look right. I suspect it would look great on someone with a different shape but it does not flatter me at all. It makes me look flat chested and frumpy, and we all know I am not going to put up with that. So, first and last wear, I suspect.

September 14

And my hair is a HOT MESS. It has been raining for 5 straight days here and for some reason I STILL thought it would be a good idea to wear it all down. It was not. When it rains I really ought to stick to up dos and this was a pretty solid reminder.

You know what though? It’s OK. We all have off days. Yesterday was one of mine.

Jacket, Target
Dress, Newport News
Boots, Zappos

Could you maybe cut the top of the dress off and turn it into a skirt? The print is really cute and colorful.

hmm... if you don't feel confident in it then I guess chuck it but I think it's cute! I love the print and the volume of the skirt... I know how it is though, some things just won't work!

I agree with Jess - try hacking that dress up before you donate it. The print is glorious!

Hm, I think if you wear a black thin turtle neck under the dress then put a bih thick black belt around the wast that might be cute! that why you can wear a bra and have more support, it's very cute tho!!

bih = big
wast = waist

I was going to buy that. Wasn't that originally a maxi? My only hesitation was the pockets. I thought they would overwhelm me.

We all definitely have those days but I gotta tell you, when I first looked at the picture post I thought..."Oh, she looks so beautiful!"

It's funny how we may perceive that we look one way when the world sees something else.

The dress may not feel great on, but you definitely pull it off with great style.

Don't think I've ever posted a comment here, but it's worth noting, in my opinion, at least, this is one of the best pictures of you I've seen. You look great.

I actually think you look great in that dress! I'm not fond of the jacket and boots you choose to pair it with... but it looks good on your body.

Different shoes. Different jacket. I like the dress though. Maybe a jacket that better picked up maybe one of the colors in the dress, esp that green.

Get a massive push up bra with massive cups in it and try again. Or put a t-shirt under it. Or send it to me...it might be too small for me though. LOVE the print, LOVE the pockets...
Or turn it into a high waisted skirt...or just send it to me...:)

Bring it to the clothing swap!

And I was actually thinking that your hair looked really good. Bigger than normal, but not in a bad way. You should see how big mine is with all the rain. It's 80s hair except no perm or hairspray was required!

Yeah, I kind of think you look amazing in that dress! And I really love it with the boots and jacket. Sorry you didn't feel comfortable in it though--I hate that.

I will admit, something about the dress seems a bit "off" to me but I can't really figure out what it is. I love the print, and it doesn't look unflattering on you but it's just not amazing. I really love the print though--I can definitely see why you bought it!

I can tell by your pose that you don't love it. I agree with others that maybe you could hack it into a skirt... or, I guess swap it for something you love!

What necklace is that? It doesn't look familar.

maybe you should let me try that dress on *wink wink nudge nudge skronkle donkle*

i've been eyeing it in the newport news catalog for ASS AGES!

Oh my gosh! I love, love, love that dress! The pockets are giant and large and amazing.

But I feel you. Even if the internet says I look good in something, if I do not think it's flattering, I will not budge. Definitely take it to a resale shop, though or swap it for something instead of donating it. OR do a giveaway on your blog with it!

I'm in agreement with the hacking the top off and trying to make it into a skirt, because the print and those pockets are gorgeous!

What about trying a vest with it?

I have to agree with the others - this is not as bad on you as you think!

I would wear it with a fitted vest over it, or a white button-down under it (or any colour tee), with a bigass belt. The pattern is gorgeous!

I'm bummed that the dress isn't working for you because that rose print rocks my socks!

I'd really like to see how that dress looks with your bad-ass leather jacket, tights, and heels.

Oh, me goodness! As soon as I saw the picture, I freaked. I bought that dress, and went through the same thing: I should have sent it back, but really wanted it to work. First, I shortened it like you did, but then, I did SO many other things to it that you almost wouldn't recognize it. It's one of the first things I plan to share when I get back to the blog. I'm really excited about it now. I agree with everyone else that it looks great on you in the photo, but I know that photos are not real life- they don't show the wonkiness of the center-front seam, the annoying bunchiness around the waist that I found myself smoothing and tugging at all day, the crappy quality of the plastic boning, the poor placement of the floral print pattern when the pieces were cut out in the factory, the cheap thinness of the fabric, the annoying sagginess and floppiness of the pockets, I could go on and on... Do I feel you, or what!? Well, I can't wait to show you what I did with it!

So several of you recommended hacking it off into a skirt and I totally feel you, but the thing is I already wasted money having it tailored and I just cannot afford to do that anymore. I hear you, I do. I just can’t.
I also can’t really afford to buy a jacket to try and make it work (and I don’t own one right now). This dress has cost me about $80 bucks at this point, maybe more, and I still hate it, so I am going to give up.
And I am wearing a bra! Though not a push up (OMG Linda, that cracked me up.) I am a 34 D and I feel like I am plenty big busted!
Thank you so so much though, I do appreciate the advice and if I could AFFORD it, I might try again. I just can’t. And thank you for saying I looked pretty even if I didn’t feel pretty. Really, thank you so much.
And Steph, Oh my gosh. YES, everything you said about it. Yes. I am excited to see what you have done with it!~
I’m going to take it to the swap, and hope someone else either looks and feels great in it or can make it into a skirt.

I hear ya. I hate those types of outfits. You tried, you gave it your all...and it fell flat (tata pun intended!).

Valiant effort!

Looks like the next day worked out much better

Maybe the dress wasn't working out, but I LOVED your hair! You don't wear it down like that often; it's really lovely.

I love your candor and bravery in taking and posting photos of yourself in something you hate! It's fantastic! If I have an outfit that doesn't photograph well, I just don't post. I like your moxy.
